Federal University Otuoke”
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the
University, Prof Mobolaji Aluko at the 4th
matriculation ceremony of the Institution
Saturday, December 6, 2014.
Giving the breakdown of 496 students admitted
by the University which according to the VC were
drawn from 21 out of the 36 states, the Northern
states of Kogi, Benue, Kaduna, Yobe and Taraba
had 10 students while the South- East, South-
South and South-West had 137, 317 and 32
students respectively.
According to the University Boss, the students
are enrolled in twelve programmes across the
two faculties and five departments, noting that
all 213 female students admitted by the
Institution have University residence in the new
four-floor West Campus Female Hostel while
their male counterparts reside in the University’s
rented hostels.
The University helmsman restated his
commitment to create a conducive environment
for students to learn, while thanking parents
and family members of the students for reposing
confidence in them to be in loco parentis of
their wards.
In his words, “we take our substitute parenthood
seriously at the University, and while you are
not exactly children in age, we urge you to
reciprocate in respect, character and civility, as
you carry out your academic studies seriously,
while at the same time enjoying the fun of
University life devoid of cultism, violence or any
kind of criminality”.
Speaking further, the VC remarked, “if you were
to look closely at the quality of our student
intake and Staff employed, and the excellence of
our facilities, you will agree that what we have
truly begun to create here at Otuoke is a citadel
of learning, teaching, research and community
service for the generation, dissemination,
preservation and application of knowledge, so
that in the shortest possible time, we can gain
and maintain a reputation as a world-class
University”.
He reiterated the intention to propel the core
values of learning, integrity, knowledge,
excellence and service to create an atmosphere
of an expensive private University in an
inexpensive public educational setting.
The Vice Chancellor noted that the research
focus on oil and gas studies, energy and
environment, marine and wetland studies,
human dynamics and conflicts resolution, and
entrepreneurship will continue to guide the
applied research and collaborative efforts of the
University which according to him will enhance
the socio-economic development of Niger-Delta.
The VC used the occasion to expressed his
gratitude to the University’s benefactors for their
unalloyed support to the new University while
urging the matriculating students to be of good
behavior and utilize facilities made available by
the University to their advantage.
An ecumenical service ends the matriculation
ceremony.
